Lived Charism

Prevention

Our country has been invaded catastrophically by the killer-disease AIDS to an extent unimaginable. Thousands of people of all ages especially young adults are ravaged by the disease. Whole families are wiped out. Some of our sisters are actively involved in national AIDS-awareness programmes. They see this service in the light of our Holy Cross spirituality to bring forth new life in situations of death.

We sisters in Lukulu responded spontaneously to the situation which affected all of us by the formation of care-groups and training of voluntary carers. We visit the sick and dying; supply them with necessary medications as well as spiritual and emotional support. For young people we organise and conduct AIDS-awareness and prevention programmes. We take care of orphans.

At the beginning the sisters gave their services mainly in hospitals and boarding schools for girls. Since education and health-care services are now taken over by the government the sisters are responding to other needs not met. Their focus is directed towards a more personalised care of the sick in their families and youth work.

In 1997 we opened four small communities for mission. We wish to express solidarity with the people by sharing their way of life. The pandemic of AIDS affects all of us and threatens disruption of life in many ways. We are trying to meet these challenges by accompanying families in a loving, sympathetic way and by helping them to help themselves.

Together with the Church in Zambia we battle against social injustice and the various forms of corruption so prevalent in our country.
